Someone on Reddit made a post about how chivalrous he is for offering his bus seat to unattractive females, because ”pretty women always had comfortable lives”…
Comfortable?
What is comfortable about your peers in middle school refusing to let you sit by them in the lunchroom and laughing when you trip on your way to the restroom to eat your lunch in solitude, because you are the chubby girl with acne and mandibular prognatism? What is comfortable about having braces twice, as well as headgear? What is comfortable about your father comparing you to your step-sister, or pointing to women on the street who he deems attractive and encouraging you to be more like them? What is comfortable about developing Body Dysmorphic Disorder and flirting with bulimia because you never feel adequate, even though you left your muffin top back in middle school? What is comfortable about being treated as if you don’t have a right to be sad or insecure because you are tall, blonde, and thin? What is comfortable about wearing make-up or a bra or putting in three hours a day at the gym? What is comfortable about your great-uncle caressing your thigh and telling you that he would leave his wife to be with you? What is comfortable about not feeling safe riding public transportation alone? What is comfortable about men wolf whistling at you on the street and acting like you owe them gratitude? What is comfortable about men acting entitled around you and women acting competitive? What is comfortable about being regarded as a “stuck-up bitch” if you are not interested in every man who communicates interest in you? What is comfortable about being taken advantage of in the back of a car by someone who you just met, and not being able to remember his name, but not being able to forget the feel of his body on top of you?
I don’t consider myself especially attractive and this has been my experience, so I can’t fathom what “comfortable lives” women who are more attractive than me must have.
Life isn’t comfortable for anyone.
